The Underground
03:54
|
|||
Welcome to the underground
this is the place we make the sounds
that no one hears
We write those songs you think you've heard
but can't quite place, in other words
we're pioneers
Some of us thrive on rejection
we see through different ears
Some of us strive for perfection
Some of us make believe
we're already there
So, welcome to our lonely rooms
this is the place we paid our dues
when they say don't
"Perhaps this wasn't meant for you"
"Perhaps you should go back to school"
...perhaps we won't
It's true we don't make much money
but still we'd like to be clear
At least we're not trying to sell you
something we ourselves
would not want to hear
So, welcome to my mortal bliss
where dreams find wings in 4 track hiss
then fly around
On dusty wings and crinkled tape
the poison songs each pollinate
a face of frowns
Unless you're planning on sorrow
the future will only let you down
I'd trade in all of my tomorrows
for an extended stay at the here and now
Because if I touched everyone on earth
I would have very little worth
in the underground

Lolynia
03:14
|
|||
I'm still doing time, but I don't mind waiting
Mind my state of mind, or I'll soon be fading
out of my world, lost from my thoughts
fading in dreams like a ghost forgotten
Cut from the frame, gone down the drain,
washed in the rain
But I'm not what you want, but my heart's still in it
tonight I'll sleep alone, but I'll still remember
us up in your room, drunk on perfume
scary little girl with her bright eyes burning
windows of rain, hair daisy chained
the cold city lights on the broad horizon
I did not ever want to leave you in that room of treasure
But I'm not what you need, but your heart's still in it
And so I have to leave, oh sweet Lolynia
I'm back on the street, off to myself,
hanging with the band at red door alley
The old port of call, back to the wall, just watching it all
And I'm not what you need, but if your heart's still in it,
don't wear it on your sleeve, sweet Lolynia
I'm out on the road, making new foes,
with the telephone Jones, that's the life we're leading .
When you're nowhere for long, everyone's wrong
They all know my songs except the one I'm singing.
So please don't sing along. Oh no, please don't sing this song.

Elli B Butterfly
04:48
|
|||
Elli B, butterfly, mon amie, what you gonna do today?
I thought we'd take a ride, on my bike, over to the frozen lake then lay down in the sun, dream out loud, underneath the animal clouds & if you get too cold, you can take my coat, or sit a little closer & tell me that my butterfly will never swim another man's sky. Cause I don't want to roll the dice to see if fate is on my side
Wrap her up in a fairytale, take a ride to a castle on the mountain. Spinning spokes bicycle bells, drop a coin in the wishing well... Her wings are tattooed to my sky, her colors light, the road that I am traveling
& I don't think my butterfly, will ever swim another, Oh tell me that my butterfly will never swim another man's sky.Cause I don't think these mortal eyes have ever seen a more beautiful smile
& I don't think this butterfly will ever land beneath my sky
& I don't think that shepherds moon, will hang around for long tonight
Still, I don't think this lonely room has ever held a more beautiful light
& All I saw was mystery while looking deep within her eyes
& I don't think these questions will get answered on the day that I die
Eli B, rose tattoo, butterfly, guess you're gonna fly on by

The Stripper
03:52
|
|||
If I had a million I know that I'd be free
said the ugly voice inside of thee
Or if you hit the big time girl
well maybe then they'd see
that there's something beautiful in thee
Something that's so beautiful, it's spiritual
it's animal, it's anything it needs to be
It's raven clawed, it's tentacled
it's writhing on its pedestal
unfolding inside of thee
When I took a moment
just to watch you on your stage
you're a child that dances 'round its grave
I hide behind the candle
in the corner of the room
and I try to dream us far away
'cause I don't want to see you
in a state of feigned relations
bending holy to stranger's smiles
For soon there'll come a night
your golden light will turn against you
you'll be pulled to the other side
If they lived forever still
they'd never live to see
all the pain that's there inside of thee
If they'd turn the lights out here
then everyone agrees
that there's something wrong inside of me
It butterflies in faces
then goes fluttering cross stages
orchestrating the coming days
So gather 'round my childhood friends
we all know how the story ends
so nobody turn the page. . . .

If there's something that you want
but you don't know how to get it
If there's something that you need
look at me, I'll be you're man in the middle
When that spotlight cuts you deep
and the band just don't seem with it
you don't have to slip this scene
I'll get you through, at the end you'll be dancing
jacked up over the moon...
locked in a slow trance...
with those eyes looking up at you...
all they see is the man from the record sleeve
Why you wanna live so dangerous?
Why you wanna live superfluous ?
Won't you go and call yourself a hearse?
Oh won't go rap with your man in the middle?
Why you gotta be so outer space?
Why you gotta wear those different faces?
Why you getting sucked into that void?
What's it gonna be, the horns or the halos?
If there's somewhere you can't go
but you really need to get there
there is someone that we know
come with me, I'm your man in the middle
Through the labyrinth of smoke
to the call girls round the table
you can have yourself a toke
while you wait, for the man with the needle
I'm taking Josie back to my room...
Because I can't be alone tonight...
We're getting jacked-up over the moon...
In the room with the red light
Why they gotta be so serious?
Where you think they get off judging us?
We don't want to live vicarious in vain
Josie doesn't say a thing
*Josie's passing away*
If you're out there on that street
and you don't think you can make it
If you're thinking about your life
realize, even the devil is an angel...
cast down with the ball and chain...
riding on the same train...
you're two ghosts in the pouring rain...
Josie still ain't saying a thing
Why'd she have to live so dangerous?
Why'd she have to live superfluous?
Won't you go and call that girl a hearse
and blame... the man in the middle
Why'd you have to be so dangerous?
Why'd you always have to play so rough?
What you gonna do to cover up the shame?
Blame the man in the middle

Venus Kissing Mars
04:14
|
|||
We were really messed up
still we hung out all night
at blacksmith bar where all is forgiven
Shadows plotting our fate
but we were too tired to wait
we both fell deep into each other
The band played sad jamboree
as you were looking at me
with eyes like holy past life lovers
And so we slipped off to your room
there beneath the stars
'cause that's just what you're supposed to do
on nights when Venus kisses Mars
I was really strung out
i left her sleeping
in the shadows cast by street lights
through her window
I left my ghost in her room
I walked up 5th avenue
through morning faces
that know no happy ending
She stirs alone in her bed
the empty bottles, no more stars
just window taps from outside branches
I sleep it off, I fix a drink
and then I'm back out with the boys
We play our songs, we move along
so much for filling up the void
I'd love to stay and comfort you
or maybe find out who you are
Oh but instead, I'll write this song
and call it "Venus Kissing Mars"
She was really messed up
she sat up drinking all alone
on roof top, heartbeats still remember
She's still that same little girl
but now abandoned
laying strung out crying
heartbeat cold December
Up in the chimney smoke
she raised her glass
silent toasts, to ghost of lovers
fade like embers
She's found her place back in her room
watching late night movie shows
It's true these dreams are not her own
but that's all you've got when dreams are gone
He's found his place, out on the streets
back home with anyone he meets
But he will leave them with a smile
if they don't let him get too deep
To boys still hanging in the bars
To girls still trapped behind the stars
On nights like this, we long for bliss
that's only Venus Kissing Mars

Broke Heart Singer
04:05
|
|||
I was in a place that I could not name
I was on my own, lost upon my way
to a place I'd never seen before
And the path was long and the moon hung low
when I heard a voice on the radio
The golden sigh of a broke heart singer
Sometimes the pauper is the poet
Sometimes the fool is wise
Sometimes the joker seems to know it
He was in a place that he tried to name
just an orphan child in the pouring rain
with a heart so old it was made by angels
In his tower room writing holy songs
that were so beautiful the devil sang along
His spirit soared above the weeper
Sometimes the blossom breaks its branches
Sometimes the angels cry
Sometimes your father is a phantom
I didn't know you
before they hung you from your halo
But somehow I knew you couldn't
last for long, save for song
So if you're in a place that you cannot name
and you're all alone, lost upon your way
to a place you've never seen before
If your path seems long and the moon is low
You might hear the voice of some holy ghost
It's the golden sigh of the broke heart singer
Sometimes the silence is not golden

Non Vada Via
03:56
|
|||
She would sit & wait in silent wonder
Shadows cast as phantoms from the moon
She was a lonely girl, so frightened of the world
He was a stranger from the streets
Swept into her world with wings of angels
Held her in the darkness of her room
He was the only man, that she had ever known
He promised her he would return
As she cried Non vada via, oh, non vada via, oh per favior, non vada via
Now she walks the streets in hopes to find him
Lost inside a raincoat wandering on
She searched with desperate eyes
Behind each golden lie
She cannot bare to be alone
Late at night the street light shines upon her
As she slowly makes her way back home
She'll sleep alone tonight, like every other night
but in her dreams he'll come to her
As she sings Non vada via, oh, non vada via, oh per favior, non vada via

Holly's Window
04:29
|
|||
Holly won't you leave a light in your window
to carry this pauper home
A beacon for a soul you cannot remember
who wanders the freezing cold
Half lit in shadow walk
dust blown through city park
to siren songs
Swallowed in shadow play
lost in a book of days
well read and torn
Holly don't you ever want to go over
the field where we used to meet
It's frozen in the bellowing of October
through hum of the city streets
I ride past the abstract lawns
the streetcars, the Audubon
the window stains
Reflection stares, broken glass
boys eyes in monster mask
whose spirit fades
Darling won't you leave a light in your window
for lost boy in wonder glow
Stranded on the street I stare above fences
your warm silhouette in flow
Oh fairy of barker street
the witch masks of Halloween
bring winter's spell
Way up above it all
safe in your window warm
you carousel

Light Upon A Hill
06:55
|
|||
I was locked in her asylum
black eyed staring from a cage
She was in her mausoleum
her spirit tattooed on the page
Staring cold through candle play
reminding me of when I used to say
I will never do you harm
if I did, couldn't live with myself for very long.
I will never do you wrong, now you're gone
still your ghost passed me gently in the hall
Now I medicate the fall
I was floating up that stream
everything was flying by me
Splintered light no metaphor
I was strung out lifeless on the floor
When her voice spoke out to me
holy mouthed and with great clarity
There's a light upon the hill
and it's real, If you go
you can make it there tonight. . .
Just keep heading for the light
soon you're lost, in the flow
no matter how you grip the wheel
You will make it there tonight
I didn't know what I was doing
trying to fix what I had ruined
I light this lamp called sympathy
A beacon in your field of enemies
To lost wanderers in plight
this song can be your halo in the night
It's your light upon a hill
and you've climbed very high
so sit with me beneath the wheel
and I will be with you tonight
We're alright, not alone
though we bleed in separate homes
I'll be your light upon the hill
if you ride toward the glow
don't let sorrow take the wheel
Leave your body in the field
cross the palms, stitch lips
to make them think that this is real
You've reached that light upon a hill
Welcome to my mausoleum
where I called them like I see them
Welcome to my war of words
where battle scars and cries can still be heard
but thank you all for taking time
to let me be your beacon in the night
and be that light upon a hill
for the ones who had no songs
or just fell beneath the wheel
While all good people carried on
on their way, without care
down the lost continuum
Another soul to feed the sun. . .

Andy Take A Bow
04:57
|
|||
In this underground, we see all the connections
roots are twisting 'round, to flower blossom erections
Animals parade, mortal chaos conundrum
Andy looks afraid, he's been thinking things over
And I don't think I need to get higher
I didn't want to get rich, I didn't want to win fame
I only wanted a few to just remember my name
I wasn't trying to chart, I wasn't trying to make money.
So in that sense I succeed, I saw to all of my needs
and without selling my soul and without swallowing whole all the pills and the thrills and the poisonous honey
Yes, These consolations, are just part of that, which keeps me alive
In my underground, My camera eye is fixated
As insects make their rounds, each one is a slave to the garden
flowered poison sounds, the horrible tree vibrating in whispers, saying "You don't think you're fooling anybody"
That didn't get you the cash, it didn't change your whole world, It didn't get you the fame, it didn't get you the girl, It didn't make you look smart in fact you look kinda funny
You said you told them the truth, but you were wearing a mask, you're growing old behind youth, you're hiding under a hat, now your asylum is closed and your field's not so sunny.
So tell me how does it feel, to hear that voice in your head, the one you couldn't escape, the one that wasn't mislead, creeping into your song, disconnecting your numbers?
And with that scrutinous eye, you used on everyone else, the scope is turning on you, so take a look at yourself... You have been living your life in a state of blind wonder.
And you'll never be rich and you'll never have fame
and what little you did, was under different names
and that's the funniest part, you really fucked yourself over
Go on you cowardice man, pretend you planned it this way, pretend you're really in charge, pretend it's integrity, that keeps you out of the scene and fading over their shoulders
Andy take a bow, take your head from those clouds, oh for crying out loud
Andy take your bow, turn your back on that crowd, it's time to throw in the towel
Andy take your bow, we don't have time for that now, come on the car it is waiting
Andy take your bow, get your head from those clouds, oh for crying out loud
Andy take your bow, I wanna be famous! I want you to know me!
Andy take your bow, we wanna be rich!!! fuck! we wanna be Bowie
Now, accept the realization, it's consolation that is keeping you down inside this underground
